My Natural Healing Journey

By Luna Crag, Founder of Airmid’s Elixirs

Welcome back to Airmid’s Elixirs. Today, I want to tell you a story—a personal one about my roots and what set me on the path to natural healing. Maybe you’ll find a little of yourself in it too.

Humble Roots in the Forest

I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Upstate New York. My family owned 33 acres of woods, surrounded by national forest. It was truly beautiful.

On our little piece of heaven, we had a small farm—nothing too big, just enough to get by. We raised cows, mules, horses, goats, chickens, pigs, and even kept bees over the years. We also had a small garden. I guess you could say I started out as a homesteader.

Lessons from My Parents

My dad worked third shift and would come home in the early morning to care for the animals. I was right there with him before school, helping out however I could.

My mom stayed home, caring for our garden and the many plants that filled our front yard. She tried to teach me about plants, but back then, it felt like everything I touched would die. That pushed me away from wanting anything to do with gardening—but she never stopped trying. She always believed in the magic of plants.

Back to the Basics

Years later, I married an amazing outdoorsman who brought me back to my roots. For three years, we lived in a camper. No running water during the cold months, no electricity except for what our generator provided, and just a mini fridge to store food.

It was rough—but honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. It reminded us of what really matters, and gave us a chance to pass those lessons down to our children. We taught them how to fetch and filter water (though we bought drinking water), wash clothes by hand, start a fire, and even build their own shelters when they wanted to camp out.

The Herbal Calling

During that time, I began studying edible plants. Soon, I was feeding my family wild salads and rekindling memories of my mother’s plant magic. That curiosity pulled me deeper into herbalism and natural healing.

While I studied, I learned about the hidden dangers in everyday products—things I’d unknowingly brought into my home. It shocked me. I realized I was paying to poison my own family. That was my turning point.

I tossed out everything: lotions, shampoos, toothpaste, deodorants—you name it. And I began crafting my own, using simple, natural ingredients.

A Life Transformed

Now, two years out of the camper and in a cozy apartment, our natural lifestyle hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s grown stronger. My children now make their own products and walk this path with me, learning the healing ways of plants.

We’ve cut out processed foods and focus on cooking fresh meals from local farms and organic sources. We even have our own little herbal medicine cabinet filled with oils, tinctures, and herbs.
