Why I Ditched Store-Bought Toilet Bowl Cleaners (And You Might Want To, Too)

Written by Luna Crag

Let’s talk toilets—not the most glamorous subject, I know. But it’s one of the most important places to keep clean in our homes. For years, I used those bright blue gels and powerful-smelling toilet bowl cleaners thinking they were doing good. They made everything smell “clean,” but I never stopped to ask what was actually in them.

Turns out, most commercial toilet cleaners are full of toxic chemicals like bleach, hydrochloric acid, and synthetic fragrances. These ingredients can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs—and even contribute to indoor air pollution. And for those of us who have kids or pets? The exposure risk is even higher. No thank you!

I started researching alternatives when I noticed headaches after cleaning the bathroom. That was my body screaming for something better.

That’s when I made the switch to an all-natural toilet bowl cleaner, and let me tell you—it works, it’s safe, and it smells amazing.

Here’s My Go-To Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaning Recipe:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup baking soda

1/2 cup white vinegar

5-10 drops of tea tree essential oil (optional for extra antibacterial power)

Directions:

1. Sprinkle the baking soda into the toilet bowl.

2. Pour in the vinegar—it’ll fizz (so satisfying!).

3. Add the essential oil if using.

4. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

5. Scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

It’s simple, safe, and saves money—and I no longer worry about what I’m breathing in or washing into the water system. Making this one switch gave me peace of mind and a cleaner conscience.

If you’re on the journey to a more natural home, this is a great place to start.
